"Aerial Oppression"

10/3/21

The second Derby has wrapped for Season 2 of Pauper 5CB. Eight maniacs returned with some new designs in order to take down the previous winning deck "Turbo Crusher" submitted the last derby by the current Champion Comrade.

To see how it went, check out this article here.

In this derby, we saw a 5CB version of "Chatterstorm" and as promised, Puermeus sought to reanimate a Grazing Kelpie. Foil, Feldon's Cane, and Exhume were staples in this round and maintained a presence as expected.

Delirium no more...

After a watchful eye, we've decided to add Delirium Skeins to the 5CB banlist at this time. While adding cards to the banlist isn't something we take lightly, Skeins has been shown to not only require answers in the form of more blue presence in the format, but is a bit against the spirit of the format as the case with most aggressive hand disruption in a 5 card format. Currently, the banlist includes: Empty the Warrens, Burning Inquiry, Wistful Thinking, and Delirium Skeins.

Shane, your submissions are always extra picante.

Current Standings

It looks like Delphi has done it yet again taking back the reins for Season 2 Champion title with "Ray Hawks" earning a total of 37 pts. This list proved hard to top by way of hurling several 2/2 flyers onto the board and keeping the vulnerable artifact land off the board. An extra piece of cheap white removal in the form of Oppressive Rays was also a great addition in ensuring the hawks could remain unblocked and dominate the skies.

Congrats again to Delphi for another great design! After 28 simulated games, I'm happy to share our rankings for Derby #2.

Prize Support Tho?

Entry is always free for the 5CB Pauper Derby and our prize support includes our very own signature timeshifted versions of our favorite Pauper pieces which are voted by our contenders upon submission. These pieces have an old-school aesthetic and feature regressed errata for a classic vibe.

Here are the prizes voted by our Top 5 contenders for Derby #2.

For the Community!

As always, the ultimate goal of this event is to gamify card interaction and brewing discussions as well as create a mini-league or 'fantasy mtg league' of sorts. It's for knowledge, but mostly a fun way for seasoned players and brewers new to the format alike to interact amidst various other virtual Pauper community events operating at the moment.

To summarize, In the first week, we will give contenders a week to brew and submit their engines.

In the second week, matchups will be posted each day and will be opened up for immediate discussion so all contenders can become more involved and talk about their matchups amongst themselves in real-time. Results will then be posted at the end of the second week.

For more information on how this works and how to get involved, check out episode 1 of the Pit Stop Podcast which dives into more detail on 5 card deck construction by seasoned 5CB contenders.

What's Next?

The list to beat is "Ray Hawks" which will be entered automatically in the next event.
Derby #
3 will open for submissions soon and will close exactly one week after submissions open. Matchups will then be posted and contenders will have one week (depending on the number of entries) to smash their lists together and determine winners.

The 5CB Pauper Derby is free to enter. If you are interested in participating, please see the ‘Events’ channel on our Discord server for more details on how to submit your five-card decklist.

We'll have an announcement for Derby #3 soon and will report the results of our next derby as usual. Until then, may your next tune run well!
